Getting started

It depends on the student’s age. Ages 14 to 17: Texas Teen Drivers Education (24 hours online, $70), or the Teen Package with 7 driving lessons included ($525). Ages 18 to 24: the 6-hour Adult Drivers Education course ($50), which Texas requires for a first license. 25 and older: the adult course is optional, but passing its highway signs and traffic laws exam means DPS can waive those parts of its written test.

Yes. We are licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) as driver education provider C3430, and approved to teach driver education online for teens and adults, as well as in person at our school in Wylie.

The teen course is 24 hours of classroom instruction in 12 lessons; most students finish in two to four weeks. The adult course is 6 hours in 8 units. You work at your own pace: the teen course stays open for 24 months and the adult course for 12 months.

No. Your progress saves as you complete each lesson, video and quiz. Log out whenever you like and continue on any phone, tablet or computer.

Yes. Read the full course syllabus and policies to see every lesson, how the tests work and what you need. If the course isn’t right for you, our 7-day refund policy applies (see Billing and refunds).

Lessons open in order: finish each lesson and pass its quiz or test to open the next. Each lesson has reading with diagrams, videos you watch to the end, practice scenarios and a short quiz. Take a 5-minute break every hour you study.

Yes. In the teen course, the permit test (Road Rules and Road Signs) is on Day 4, after the Module One test. Pass it and we issue your learner license certificate (DE-964). In the adult course, the final exam covers highway signs and traffic laws, so DPS can waive those parts of its written test.

The online course covers the classroom part. Teens also need 14 hours in the car with a licensed instructor (7 hours driving and 7 hours observing). Book them with us, or choose the $525 Teen Package, which includes them. Teens also complete 30 hours of practice with a licensed adult, including 10 at night.

No, it isn’t required at 25 and older. But the adult course is a good way to prepare, and passing its highway signs and traffic laws exam means DPS can waive those parts of its written test.

Lesson quizzes need 70% and allow 3 attempts; if you still don’t pass, call us and we’ll help. Module tests can be retaken with new questions after you review the module. The final exam allows 3 attempts, each with different questions; under Texas rules, failing it three times means taking the course again. Correct answers aren’t shown, so every attempt is a fair test.

24 months for the teen course and 12 months for the adult course, from the day you enroll.

Certificates & DPS

Teens: the learner license certificate (DE-964) after Days 1 to 4, the Module One test and the permit test; the driver license certificate after all 24 hours, the final exam and the 14 hours in the car. Adults: the ADE-1317 within 15 working days of passing the final exam. Wylie Driving School issues each certificate, and it appears on your Student Dashboard to download and print.

Yes. Print your certificate and bring it to DPS with your other original documents. If you’re unsure what to bring, call us before your appointment.

Your certificate, proof of identity, your Social Security number, two proofs of Texas residency and the fee. Teens also bring the signed Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) from their school. For the driving test, bring the vehicle’s registration and insurance, and your ITTD (teens) or ITAD (adults 18 to 24) certificate. See our guides for the full checklist.

Call us right away with the correct details, exactly as on your birth certificate or passport. We’ll correct the record and issue a new certificate.

Test results from a driving school are generally accepted by DPS for two years. If your certificate is older than that, call us before your DPS appointment.
